Composite Bonding in Kitchener
Tooth-coloured resin shaped by hand to repair chips, add length to worn edges and close small gaps. Usually done without removing enamel.
What Composite Bonding Is
Composite bonding uses tooth-coloured resin, the same family of material we use for white fillings. We shade-match the resin to your teeth, apply it in thin layers, shape it, harden it with a curing light and polish it.
Because the resin bonds to the surface of your tooth, bonding usually needs little or no drilling. Most cases are done in one visit, and many need no freezing at all.
It is a conservative way to change the shape or edge of a tooth. It is also repairable. If a small piece chips later, we can often add to it.
What Bonding Can Help With
Bonding is often used for front teeth that are:
- Chipped from a fall, a sport or biting something hard
- Worn at the edges from grinding or acid erosion, so they look shorter
- Short or uneven compared with the teeth beside them
- Gapped, with small spaces between teeth
- Slightly misshapen, such as a narrow or pointed lateral tooth
Bonding changes shape and edges. It does not straighten teeth. If your teeth are crowded or turned, Invisalign may come first, with bonding after to refine the edges.
Bonding or Veneers?
Both bonding and dental veneers change how front teeth look. They suit different goals.
Composite bonding
- Usually little or no enamel removed
- Typically done in one visit
- Resin can stain and wear over time and may need polishing or touch-ups
- Easy to repair or add to later
Porcelain veneers
- A small amount of enamel is removed so the veneer fits
- Made as custom shells, then bonded in place
- Porcelain resists staining
- Suited to larger changes in colour, shape or size
Some people start with bonding and move to veneers later. Others choose veneers from the start. We show you both options for your teeth and explain the trade-offs.
Planning the Shape First
Front teeth are about proportion. Before we add resin, we look at your smile line, the length of your teeth when your lips are relaxed, and how your teeth meet when you bite.
If you plan to whiten your teeth, do it before bonding. Resin does not change colour with whitening, so we match the bonding to your final shade.
If you want several changes at once, such as whitening, bonding and straightening, a smile makeover plan puts them in the right order.
Caring for Bonded Teeth
Bonded teeth need the same daily care as your other teeth: brush twice a day and floss. A few habits help bonding last longer:
- Avoid biting nails, pens or ice with bonded teeth
- Wear a night guard if you grind (we make custom mouthguards)
- Keep up your hygiene visits so we can polish and check edges
Coffee, tea and red wine can stain resin over time. A polish at your cleaning visit often helps.

Composite Bonding Questions
Does bonding hurt?
Most bonding needs little or no drilling, so many people do not need freezing. If a tooth needs repair underneath, we will tell you first.
How long does bonding last?
It varies with your bite, habits and diet. Resin can chip or stain over time and may need touch-ups or replacement. We review bonded teeth at your regular visits.
Can bonding close a gap between my front teeth?
Small gaps can often be closed with bonding. Larger gaps or gaps caused by tooth position may be better treated with Invisalign first.
Can I whiten bonded teeth?
Whitening does not change the colour of resin. If you want whiter teeth, whiten first and we match the bonding to your new shade.
Is bonding covered by insurance?
It depends on your plan and whether the bonding repairs damage or is cosmetic. We can help you understand your coverage and provide a treatment estimate.
