Chipped or Broken Front Tooth in Kitchener: Same-Day Repair Options
A chipped front tooth changes how you smile in photos, at work and on video calls. The good news: most chips and breaks can be repaired, and many can be repaired the same day. This guide covers what to do first, the three main repair options, and how to choose between them. If it happened today, call us at (519) 748-2524. We keep time in the schedule for these visits.
1. What to do in the first hour
- Save any pieces of the tooth in a clean container with a little milk.
- Rinse your mouth with warm water and hold a cold compress on your lip or cheek if it is swollen.
- Cover a sharp edge with sugar-free gum or orthodontic wax.
- Avoid biting with that tooth until we see you.
If the injury came from a hard fall or a hit to the face, or you have bleeding that will not stop, go to a hospital emergency department first.
2. Option one: composite bonding
For small to medium chips, we can often rebuild the edge with tooth-coloured composite resin. We match the shade to your natural teeth, shape the resin by hand and polish it. It usually takes one visit, needs little or no drilling, and costs less than a crown or veneer. Bonding can stain or chip over time, so it may need touch-ups every few years. Read more about composite bonding.
3. Option two: a same-day CEREC crown
When a large part of the tooth breaks, or the tooth already had a big filling or a root canal, a crown protects what is left. With our CEREC system we scan the tooth, design the crown on screen, and mill it in the office from a block of ceramic. Many patients leave with the final crown in one visit, with no temporary and no second appointment. Read more about same-day crowns.
4. Option three: porcelain veneers
If the chipped tooth is one of several front teeth you were already unhappy with (stained, uneven or worn), this can be the moment to plan veneers for the whole smile line instead of repairing one tooth in isolation. We can bond the chip today so you look and feel normal, then plan veneers at your own pace. Read more about veneers.
5. How we choose with you
We look at how much tooth is missing, whether the nerve is affected, how you bite, and how the tooth fits with the rest of your smile. Then we show you the options side by side with costs, how long each lasts and the upkeep it needs. You choose. If the nerve has been damaged, we treat that first so the repair lasts.
