Invisalign for Adults in Kitchener-Waterloo: Timeline

Plenty of adults want straighter teeth but do not want brackets and wires at work. Clear aligners like Invisalign are one way to do it. The aligners are removable, made of smooth plastic, and hard for most people to notice.

This guide covers what adult Invisalign treatment looks like from first visit to retainers, what daily life involves, and what affects how long it takes.

Is Invisalign Right for Adults?

Yes, adults can be good candidates. Many adults ask about Invisalign because of:

  • Crowding that makes teeth hard to clean
  • Gaps between teeth
  • Teeth that have shifted since braces as a teen
  • Bite issues, such as an overbite or crossbite
  • A wish to straighten teeth before veneers, bonding or crowns

Whether Invisalign suits you depends on how your teeth and bite need to move, and on the health of your teeth and gums. Some cases need other approaches. Your dentist assesses this at your consultation.

Step 1: Consultation

Your Invisalign journey begins with a consultation. We look at your teeth, gums and bite, talk about what you want to change, and check whether Invisalign is a good option for you. If there are cavities or gum issues, we usually treat those first.

You can book a free consultation at our Kitchener office. See our Invisalign treatment page for an overview.

Step 2: Digital Scan and Treatment Plan

Next, we take a digital scan of your teeth. Our office uses the CEREC Primescan digital scanner, so you skip trays of impression material. The scan is used to build a 3D model of your teeth.

From that model, we create a custom treatment plan that maps how your teeth will move in stages. You see the planned movements before aligners are made. This is a good time to ask questions about the plan, the number of aligners and the estimated timeline.

Step 3: Receiving Your Aligners

When your aligners arrive, you come in to get started. We check the fit, explain how to put them in and take them out, and go over care instructions.

Some treatment plans use small tooth-coloured bumps bonded to certain teeth, called attachments. They help the aligners grip and move teeth. Your dentist will tell you if your plan includes them.

Daily Life With Aligners

Wear time

Aligners only move teeth when you wear them. Invisalign treatment is designed around wearing aligners most of the day and night, taking them out to eat and drink anything other than water. Your dentist gives you the specific wear time for your plan.

Eating and drinking

Take aligners out to eat. Brush or rinse before putting them back in, so food is not trapped against your teeth. Water is fine with aligners in.

Switching aligners

You move to the next set of aligners on a schedule your dentist sets. Each set moves your teeth a small amount.

Cleaning

Rinse and gently clean your aligners daily. Keep brushing twice a day and flossing, and keep your hygiene visits.

Comfort

Many people feel pressure for a day or two with each new set. Smooth plastic is generally comfortable on cheeks and gums.

Check-Ins During Treatment

You visit the office periodically so we can check progress, make sure teeth are tracking with the plan and hand out your next sets of aligners. If something is off track, the plan may need adjusting with new aligners.

Our Kitchener office is open Monday and Tuesday until 7 pm, which helps if you work during the day in Kitchener, Waterloo or Cambridge.

What Affects Your Timeline

Every case is different. These factors shape how long treatment takes:

  • How much your teeth need to move. Small spacing changes take less time than complex bite corrections.
  • Your wear time. Not wearing aligners as directed is a common reason treatment takes longer.
  • How your teeth respond. Teeth move at different rates in different people.
  • Refinements. Some plans need extra aligners near the end to fine-tune positions.
  • Other dental treatment. Fillings, cleanings or gum care may need to happen first.

We give you an estimated timeline once your treatment plan is built.

After Invisalign: Retainers

Teeth tend to drift back toward their old positions after any straightening. Retainers help hold your teeth in their new positions. Your dentist will recommend a retainer and a wearing schedule at the end of treatment.

Invisalign Before Cosmetic Work

Straightening first can make cosmetic work simpler. When teeth are in better positions, bonding or veneers may need less change to the tooth. If you are thinking about a bigger change, see our smile makeover page for how we put treatments in order.

Cost Factors

We do not publish prices, because plans vary. Cost depends on the complexity of your case, the number of aligners, whether refinements are needed and whether other treatment is part of the plan. Some insurance plans include orthodontic coverage. We can help you understand your coverage and provide a treatment estimate.

Frequently Asked Questions

Am I too old for Invisalign?

Adults of many ages use Invisalign. Healthy teeth and gums matter more than age. We check your mouth at your consultation.

How many hours a day do I wear aligners?

Invisalign is designed to be worn most of the day and night, removed only to eat, drink anything other than water, and clean. Your dentist gives you the wear time for your plan.

Will people notice my aligners?

The aligners are clear and many people do not notice them. Attachments, if used, are tooth-coloured.

How often do I need to visit the office?

You come in periodically for check-ins. We set the schedule based on your plan and progress.

Do I need a retainer after Invisalign?

Yes, a retainer is usually recommended to help keep teeth in their new positions. We discuss options at the end of treatment.
